USDA FS El Portal Greenhouse Reconstruction

Project Overview

MFS Construction, LLC (MFS) was contracted by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide all labor, materials, tools, and equipment necessary to replace the Greenhouse located at El Portal Visitor Center to full and enhanced operating capability.

Project Details

The Greenhouse area has been in an abandoned site since the 2017 Hurricane Irma and Maria. The area originally included one (1) Educational Greenhouse, two (2) growing greenhouses, one (1) area for compost and an aerial irrigation system. Additional irrigation was done by hose with water supplied via an existing PVC pipe that comes from a small dam adjacent to PR-191 Road. A total reconstruction of the EYNF greenhouse is needed to have a safe and suitable working space to provide support to the reforestation mission at the forest.

The project consisted of the removal and replacement of one (1) educational greenhouse structure – 20’ wide x 24’ long x 13’ high with an occupant load factor of 50net sf per person as defined in IBC 2018 for educational, with 4’ wide doors. The roof was knitted, not woven, greenhouse 50% shade cloth. The floor was a gravel slab with 2% minimal drainage and a slip resistant finish. The walls of the greenhouse were made of vinyl coated welded wire fence. The installation of two (2) growing and caring greenhouses – 20’wide x 24’ long x 13’ high. Each greenhouse frame was rust proof, galvanized steel with 4’ wide doors. The floor was a gravel slab slip resistant surface with 2% minimal drainage. Both greenhouses were built to withstand winds of up to 168 mph. The roof was made of knitted greenhouse 50% shade cloth. The installation of one (1) - 12’x 12’ concrete storage shed. The shed contained (four) 4 security windows, air extractor system for ventilation with double doors. On the outside, there was a plastic sink and a water connection for a hose. The installation of one (1) - 10’wide x 10 ’long x 13’ height galvanized steel structure with a gravel floor and no walls. Floor slab had adequate drainage. System had one (1) - 600-gallon water cistern. The irrigation system supplied a mist irrigation system to the educational greenhouse and a sprinkler irrigation system to the two growing and caring greenhouses. The system was anchored to the floor, solar powered and with an automatic on/off time setup. The removal and replacement of 1,200 LF of 3-in PVC material pipe installed above ground. The new PVC pipe was connected to a new 600-gallon water cistern. The installation of a new gravel driveway - 100’ long x 10’ wide x 6” deep. Replacement of 12’ of existing curb with mountable curb at driveway location.

This task order was a result of MFS Construction, LLC being awarded an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) Alt/Repair Construction Services Multiple Award Task Order Contract (MATOC) for construction, maintenance, repair, and alteration of real property to support the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA).
