San Juan Customs House Renovation Project

Project Overview

MFS Construction, LLC was contracted by Perini Management Services, Inc. to support of the U.S. Customs Border & Protection to provide construction services and Historical Preservation and restoration at Office of Field Operations San Juan Customs House. The project was localized at La Puntilla, San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Project Details

The project consisted of removal, salvage, and restoration of historic wood and metals. MFS was contracted by the extensive experience in Historic Buildings, knows how to proceed with the techniques for this type of construction, and our staff has been distinguished by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP).

The task executed included restoring and installing all historical windows, windows trims, and doors wood. Each historical window and door were worked according to the indications, including finishing, painting, and fabricating wooden frame assemblies. Furthermore, historic metal furniture’s was restored and replicated such as teller windows and perimeter gates.

The interior and exterior building carried out concrete repairs on the ceiling and walls. The historic building is in proximity to the sea, materials resistant to the coastal climate were considered. The columns were structurally reinforced with carbon fiber (FRP). In addition, the construction water fountain was replicated of the original one. The cornices restorations were part of the MFS scope of work due to the historic building a specific design was required. MFS removed and installed a clay tile roof that resulted from hurricane damage.

MFS was responsible for providing all labor force, materials, and equipment required for each task.
