Project Details

The project consisted of the removal and replacement of the historic bluestone landing and treads of the Old Orchard Museum front entrance steps, as well as the historic brick risers for each step. The water damaged foundation was entirely replaced to ensure the strength and longevity of the new porch.

As the general contractor, MFS’ role for this project was to remove the existing historic handrails and safeguard them for reinstallation. Protect surrounding areas, remove any shrubs, and save for reinstallation later. Demolish the entire steps including their footing, then form, place, and finish a new concrete footing. Supply and install brick risers, and tool joints to mimic the brick on the house. MFS made templates for stone fabrication, so the new bluestone matches the original pattern.

MFS excavated the bluestone sidewalk, installed crushed gravel, formed out for 4” slab, installed road mat reinforcing, supply, placed and finished a new concrete pad, and topped it with new 1” patterned NYS flagstone with thermal finish. All joints were washed down with a mild acid solution. Lastly, the original historic handrails were reinstalled to complete the project.
