FWS Fenske Visitor Center at Great Swamp NWR

Basking Ridge, New Jersey

Project Overview

MFS Construction, LLC (MFS) completed the construction of a 5,000-square-foot addition to the Helen C. Fenske Visitor Center at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. This expansion aimed to enhance the center’s capacity and serve as a future headquarters for refuge staff. The team erected a new steel- and wood-framed building that included a multi-purpose room, expanded office space, and designated storage areas. New electrical and HVAC systems were installed to support the new addition, and the existing electrical service was upgraded to meet both current and future demands.

Project Details

To accommodate increased usage, a new septic system was constructed to service both the new and existing facilities. The site work also involved the installation of rain gardens for improved drainage and an electric vehicle charging station to support sustainability goals. The construction team carried out minor demolition work within the existing center, including the removal of a bathroom, which was replaced by updated facilities in the new structure.

Additional scope included upgrades to the Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and Video Surveillance System (VSS) within the existing Visitor Center. Through this comprehensive scope of work, MFS Construction enhanced both the operational capabilities for the National Wildlife Refuge staff and the overall visitor experience. The work was completed with minimal disruption to ongoing refuge activities and was aligned with the project’s goal of providing an efficient and environmentally considerate expansion.
