Auger/Mud Rotary Drill Operator

Overview

Seeking an Auger/Mud Rotary Drill Operator. The successful candidate will travel to different work sites, primarily NY and NJ, but will be willing to travel to surrounding states, if needed, to perform geotechnical and/or environmental drilling. The selected candidate will be conducting subsurface investigations to depths up to 100 feet below grade utilizing CME and Geoprobe drill rigs. The Drill Operator will safely operate drill rigs and direct/supervise drilling helpers. The Drill Operator will also assist as necessary in the mobilization and demobilization for projects in both the field and the shop.


This position will be primarily on projects in the field and the Drill Operator will be expected to perform work year-round, in varying weather conditions that may be wet, dry, cold, or hot. The Drill Operator will have to carry equipment and lift heavy objects. Depending on workload and client demand, this position may be required to work nights and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate and assist in maintaining the drill rigs.
  • Supervise and train the drilling helper(s) assigned to the drill rig.
  • Verify positions of boring locations and the presence of underground/overhead obstructions/utilities before drilling to determine if it is safe to move forward with the process.
  • Check gauges, monitor drilling conditions, and pay close attention to equipment to decide if it needs to be altered or adjusted during drilling.
  • Use previous experience/knowledge of soil or rock conditions to determine which drilling technique or rig is appropriate for each job in order to maximize safety and productivity and reduce possible equipment damage.
  • Stop, start, and control machine drilling speed and alignment as well as position drills to stabilize machines during drilling.
  • Regulate downward pressure, rotary speed, and air pressure, depending on the type of material the drill is advancing through, changing procedures and settings for each individual job as needed.
  • Perform split spoon sampling via automatic, donut, and/or safety hammer.
  • Complete all job-required paperwork including: tailboards, safety documentation, system startup and abandonment documentation, equipment condition documentation, incident reports, etc.
  • Perform rock coring via traditional or wire line methodologies.
  • Perform pavement coring.
  • Follow all protocol and standard operating procedures to guarantee safety and compliance on the job site and keep team members safe from injury.
  • Position and assemble casing pipes, augers, drill rods, and other drilling support equipment.
  • Perform drill rig inventory and alert the shop of materials needed to complete a project.
  • Effectively communicate with supervisor and coworkers.
  • Perform general maintenance/upkeep of the drill rigs and update the shop as to when the drill rig requires shop maintenance.
  • Follow specific instructions and carry out tasks in a safe manner.
  • Ability to safely assess MPT requirement and/or interpret on site MPT documents and enforce.
  • Monitor safety and regulatory compliance to ensure compliance with company safety policies and OSHA regulations. Develop a full understanding of MFS’ safety policies and procedures and promote our safety culture.
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices on field operations and shop area.
  • Perform pre-shift and post-shift safety inspections and complete daily equipment inspection reports.
  • Able to perform minor repairs and service to equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings pertaining to drill operation.

Physical Demands

  • Able to occasionally lift 75 pounds
  • Can expect to work with hand tools and some chemicals
  • Being on call and available to work at any time the customer requires
  • Able to load, unload, and move large equipment, materials and tools
  • Continuous walking, stair climbing, and lifting
  • Full range of physical motions associated with general labor work
  • Continual exposure to all outdoor weather conditions (extreme heat and cold); exposure to noise and fumes generated from motorized equipment

Experience

  • Previous 5-10 years of experience as a Drill Operator
  • Holds NJ state drilling licenses
  • Minimum High School diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Class A CDL license
  • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must be willing to travel within NJ, NY, and adjoining states
  • Motivated and excited to grow with a small firm and the potential to advance with the company
  • Ability to communicate effectively with managers, clients, and contractors
  • Background check (required)
  • DOT drug and alcohol testing including pre-employment controlled substances screening

Preferences

  • Knowledgeable with operating CME and Geoprobe drill rigs
  • Mechanical skills and construction background
  • 40 hour HAZWOPER and OSHA 30 training
  • TWIC card
